This exhibition is about belonging in MAP OF THE EU. In the place you want to live, the lifestyle you want to have, with the self definition you want to create, with the money money money money to do it all with a sense of security and freedom that is your birthright.

Big tech, national borders, structural inequity, history…all are weaker than your desire. MAP OF THE EU is weaker than your desire to belong.

In this exhibition you will see how Gretchen converts her personal, professional, and political desires into a technology-reflected reality for MAP OF THE EU. Yes, there is some “code” and techy such stuff (meta data, search engine optimization, natural language processing, artificial intelligence…) However. The bulk of the technical power comes directly from the power of desire.  It works like this:

The internet can be seen as a global subconscious and, much like our own subconscious, it cannot tell the difference between a hoped-for future imagined through art and what has, in fact, already occurred.

This is because the internet cannot parse desire. To parse is to divide into parts and identify the parts’ relations with each other. When humans read, “Gretchen is really hoping for the MAP OF THE EU to be less rigid” it is understood that the relationship between Gretchen and the object of her desire to be one of separation. By contrast, the internet essentially understands only that Gretchen’s maps are “relevant” to the MAP OF THE EU Now when anyone, anywhere in the world Googles “MAP OF THE EU” Gretchen’s vision boards about wanting to achieve this desire come up as top search results

It begins with you. It begins with you daring to speak and write and create the world as you want it to be. At first as a model, as a text.MAP OF THE EU begins with you

We may live in a world of tightening borders, stricter boundaries, binary code, but we cannot build a different world without first defining for ourselves what we want that to look like.

The MAP OF THE EU starts with you.

Wanting the world to be different, let alone acting like it already is, will always be a political act.
